On November 1, 2010, at 6:43pm, Maurice Lee Conn heard his wife of nearly 45 years, Carole Ann Conn, say that she loved him, and he smiled for the last time.
Born on November 20, 1942, Maurice grew up in the predominantly English/Irish farming community of Grelton, Ohio. His father, Charles Burson Conn, and his mother, Elvera Helberg Conn, bought a farmstead directly across the road from Maurice’s grandparents, Frank and Edith Conn, and close by his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Julianne Badenhop Helberg.
There, Maurice and his twin sisters, Joyce and Carol, learned the value of hard work, family love, and a keen sense of humor. Maurice became an expert at spotting inclement weather to keep from getting caught too far out in the field during a downpour, developed a taste for sauerkraut, and by the time he reached high school, he knew that girls liked to be twirled on the dance floor and had become his cousin Sharon’s favorite Jitterbug partner.
Valedictorian of his high school class, Maurice went on to Ohio State University, which he paid for by raising Angus beef cattle and welding in the summers. At Ohio State, Maurice studied Biology and became fluent in Spanish after studying in Mexico and Spain. His experience with the International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) program in Spain also introduced him to the love of his life, Carole. The two met after acting as ambassadors for intercultural understanding in small farming communities abroad. They married on November 20, 1965, on Maurice’s birthday.
Maury and Carole started their family, which would grow to include three daughters and a son, as he continued his graduate studies at the University of Michigan and began what would become a long career in the Michigan Public Schools. Throughout his career he became known for his strong leadership skills and quick wit. As Superintendent of the Jonesville, Michigan, Public School District, he became one of the first school leaders to encourage teachers to work through pregnancy. He ushered schools through strikes and budget deficits, and consulted on educational matters throughout the country. He was also a strong advocate for inclusion and “least restrictive environment” for special needs students, and Saline, Michigan, became a model school district because of his vision and strength. He retired as superintendent of the Saline, Michigan, Public School District in 1993.
Maury encouraged his own family to excel as well. “Go for it,” is what he told his wife when she decided to pursue graduate studies after raising the couple’s four children. Carole earned a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from University of Michigan and became a Registered Dietitian. Each of his four children also earned college degrees.
Excelling meant more than academic or professional success to Maury. He fostered in his children a love of art and an appreciation for travel and reading and a “you can do it” attitude toward fixing anything. Maury admired the art of others and delighted in creating his own, especially with plants and flowers. Maury sculpted beautiful bonsai trees and had such a love for flowers that his home was never without one of his floral arrangements. He even arranged the flowers for his children’s weddings. Both Maury and Carole traveled widely and encouraged their children and grandchildren to explore the world as well. Exchange students from many countries enriched their home and became lifelong friends. A voracious reader, Maury always had a new book to recommend or discuss. His own “you can do it” attitude enabled him to renovate several homes over the years.
As Maury ended his career in education, he happily followed his wife Carole to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she began a career as a research scientist and professor of nutrition. Maurice spent his retirement volunteering, collecting many close friends, and delighting in his increased time to develop his artistic eye. As an artist, he painted and drew pictures, made pottery, built furniture, and remodeled their Albuquerque home.
He was never lacking a new vision for beautifying his life, but also delighted in discussing his children’s artistic endeavors: his eldest Ellen spins her own yarn and knits her own designs; Sara is a prolific painter and remodels homes; Nathan plays his original music on guitar and mandolin, paints, and has a degree in architecture which he uses to remodel homes; and Susannah uses her masters in acting to teach at a public theatre high school and writes, plays, and sings her own musical compositions. Maurice continued creating new art until he no longer had the strength.
Once Maury shared with his loved ones that he was ailing, cancer took him within eight weeks, to the great disappointment of so many people. However, during those weeks, Maury enjoyed an outpouring of love. His phone rang constantly with calls from friends and family offering cheerful encouragement. Friends and family dropped by daily and many even traveled from across the country and made international trips to share their fondness for him in person. And he had a basket brimming with letters, pictures, and notes from those who couldn’t make it to his side. He was a treasure of a man, and he died knowing just how much he meant to so many. He is survived by his wife and children, his five grandchildren, and his twin sisters and their families.
